Here are some fun facts about the Fourth of July:
1. The Second Continental Congress actually voted to declare independence from Britain on July 2, 1776, but the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted and signed on July 4.
2. John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers and future President, believed that July 2 would be the day celebrated as America's independence day and even wrote to his wife predicting it. However, July 4 became the date that stuck.
3. The original draft of the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, with some revisions made by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.
4. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence took place on July 8, 1776, in Philadelphia.
5. The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is traditionally tapped 13 times on July 4th to symbolize the 13 original colonies.
6. The original American flag, often referred to as the "Betsy Ross flag," had 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the 13 colonies.
7. Three U.S. Presidents have died on July 4th: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1826 (the 50th anniversary of the Declaration), and James Monroe in 1831.
8. The 50-star American flag design, which is the current version, was adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became a state.
9. The hot dog eating event held on Coney Island in New York City is a popular Fourth of July tradition. The current record is held by Joey Chestnut, who ate 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in 2020.
10. The Fourth of July is a big day for fireworks. In fact, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, around 15,000 fireworks displays take place across the country on this day.
